In 1855, Rev. Loyal A. Alford, a committed preacher and church planter, came to Elkhart (total population 1,500) and was led of God to begin a new congregation. The first building of Elkhart Baptist Church was dedicated on July 23 with only three members.
Twenty years later, with a membership of just 109, the church installed their first baptistry, and by 1891 the church saw its first gas lights and furnace. By the late 1920's membership had more than quadrupled.
The depression years were financially difficult on most churches, including First Baptist. Men would walk the rail lines looking for coal to heat the sanctuary
Another major milestone was reached when an educational unit was built in 1956. The emphasis on education and ministry to families was contagious; just four years later, the church began duplicate Sunday morning services.
By 1963 another brand new auditorium was dedicated, the design being quite unique for its time.
A protracted period of growth followed. Even with a bigger building, it didn't take long for the average Sunday morning to become crowded.
In the spring of 2000, the church began dreaming of further expansion, and soon construction on its current property located on County Road 17 began. The new 86,000-square-foot building was completed in July of 2005, and for the first time all ministries were held in one location.
Throughout the history of FBC, we have never abandoned the values which were present at the beginning: a Word-centered approach to ministry, and a goal to share the gospel both locally and globally. First Baptist Church is committed to building on those foundations and to being a tangible example of God's love to those around the block and around the world. |
